About us

The Bhumij language is an Austroasiatic language, part of the Munda subfamily, with close connections to languages such as Ho, Mundari, and Santali. It is primarily spoken by the Bhumij people in regions across the Indian states of Jharkhand, Odisha, and West Bengal.

Language and Culture Preservation

As of the 2011 census, only 27,506 individuals out of a total Bhumij population of 911,349 spoke Bhumij as their mother tongue. The majority have shifted to regional dominant languages, making Bhumij an endangered language.

Script Creator

The Bhumij language historically lacked a script for written documentation. This changed when the Ol Onal script was created by Ol Guru Mahendra Nath Sardar between 1981 and 1992. This script became a significant milestone in preserving the Bhumij language and culture.
